If you are looking for a well made wooden play set for a little boy with a fireman type theme, then this set may just be what you are looking for. The KidKraft Hometown Heroes Wooden Play Set stands out in a market crowded with flimsy plastic toys.
The Hometown Heroes play set features 4 floors that are divided into a police station on the one side and a fire station on the other. Each side has richly detailed rooms with furniture pieces matching the theme of the different rooms. This makes for 8 rooms in total. On top of the building there is also a helipad and a little silver bell hanging on top of the fire station (oh, ze bells, ze bells!!)
A fireman, policeman, two dogs, a firetruck, police motorcycle and helicopter live on the premises and are ready to assist the public 24 hours a day. A sliding pole and an elevator helps our hometown heroes to get between the buildings floors as quick as they can.

The Hometown Heroes wooden 24 pieces play set comes well packaged. Its dimensions once set up are 27″ wide, 10″ deep, and 38″ tall and it weighs about 27 pounds. The assembly instructions that come with the set are in the form of black and white pictures which does make assembly a little harder to figure out actually. But it’s not an impossible job by any means.
The screws are color coded to match up to the color of the part of the play set it screws into. Having a look at the picture of the finished product every now and again helps one see the “bigger picture” while working though the steps in the manual.
On average it takes about 1 to 2 and a half hours to finish the build. Have someone help you sort the different pieces and read you the instructions while you do the actual assembly steps. The pieces are not packed in order of assembly so it definitely helps to have someone at least help you sort the parts before you start building the set. Some parts are a little fiddly to get aligned properly – but just keep working on it till they do.
This is a wonderfully engaging play set that is sure to appeal to any little boy (and sometimes girls too). The rooms and building itself looks fantastic – lots of little details. Lots of furniture to arrange in the rooms as well.
Lots of little scenarios can be played out in the two parts of the wooden play set. Say, Mr Fireman and Mr Policeman takes a well deserved shower after a hard day’s work keeping the streets free of nasty thugs and naughty fires. They then catch up on some episodes of Rescue Me or NYPD Blue before getting a quick nap before the next emergency call comes in. When the call comes through that there’s a cat stranded up in a tree AND a cat burglar on the loose they can whizz down the fire pole and elevator to the waiting truck and bike below. They can even decide to take the helicopter if they need to get to the scene of a massive toy car pile-up even quicker.
Exercising on the treadmill in the gym will help them work up an appetite when they sit down in the kitchen to a plate of baloney sandwiches (again? seriously?) which they’ll feed to the two dogs while they put on the truck or motorbike siren (it really does make a noise) to clear the road down to Pizza Hut (it’s an emergency people!). The helicopter would be quicker, but it doesn’t have a siren. The sirens on the bike and truck are not too loud or annoying and almost halfway decently mimics a real siren.
Add any other similarly themed toys and vehicles and you can double the playing possibilities almost instantly. Like say, a T-Rex attacking the city or Ken and Barbie having a domestic dispute.

Notes on Quality and Operation
Children ages 3 and older will be able to enjoy the Hometown Heroes set. Maybe even dad will love this. There is a choking hazard warning for toddlers younger than 3 due to some small parts present in the design.
Only the motorcycle and firetruck have built-in sounds – the helicopter doesn’t make a sound (i.e. it’s a stealth chopper). The elevator on some sets seem to move with difficulty – some lubrication will probably fix this. There’s bound to be some WD40 or KY Jelly round the house somewhere.
The bottom floor doors on some sets seem to open upwards like a garage door instead of sideways like a barn door – this won’t make much difference either way since you have a working door basically. You may want to add a drop of glue to the 4th floor ladder leading up to the helipad to keep it in place – it tends to be somewhat wobbly. We don’t want any injuries round the workplace, so it is a good fix to do upon setup.
You can expand the playing possibilities of this set by adding other action toys and vehicles of a similar theme.
Hometown Heroes Wooden Play Set – Final Thoughts
So, if you have been looking for something like a dollhouse (but with a theme more suited to boys imaginations) this set may be just the ticket. The Hometown Heroes wooden play set with 24 pieces, has the right stuff to keep little boys busy for hours.
It’s attractive, interactive and there are tons of firefighting, crime busting fun to be had with the included furniture and figurines. Because of it’s wood based construction, this toy should last a good while too. It is quite simply a great little “dollhouse” for boys.
